A distinguished history
In 1692, Spier's first owner, Arnout Janz took possession of the property. He soon realised the potential for winegrowing and planted the first vines. In 1712 the first grapes were pressed on the farm and today one of the Cape's oldest wine cellar buildings, dated 1767, still takes pride of place on the estate.
The signature wines of Spier, distinctive in their individuality and expression, are hallmarked by a strong heritage, dating back to the plantings of the first vineyards.

Spier Private Collection is the multi-award winning flagship range. The choice of cultivars is dictated each year by the quality of fruit available from harvest.
Spier Vintage Selection is comprised of ultra-premium blends using cultivars of lesser renown. Here the winemaker becomes the artist, blending the wines as though colours on a flavourful canvas.
The simply named Spier is a premium range for contemporary living. Like the ultra-premium ranges, the wines are produced from single, low-yielding vineyards using gently vinification to capture varietal character.
Spier Discover is custom-made for everyday enjoyment. An artful blend of flavourful fruit, Discover offers approachable wines of consistent value and quality.
At the entry to the Savanha brand is Savanha Sun, an accessible range for modern consumers. Bursting with flavour, Savanha Sun is ideal on its own or accompanied by food.
Savanha Special Reserve is a hand-crafted range that showcases the best of unique South African style. These are complex, fruit-driven wines of exceptional quality and austere sophistication.
World-class facilities and award-winning ethics
Spier owns and operates two core businesses. Spier Leisure Holdings includes a hotel, property development, restaurants, conference facilities, an award-winning golf course and retail outlets. The hotel and golf course were the first such facilities to be awarded Fairtrade status by Fairtrade in Tourism South Africa. Spier Wines was the first South African winery to receive certification from the Wine Industry Ethical Trading Association. Spier is a member of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative for sustainable production.
