Robertson Winery is recognized today as one of South Africa's leading cellars. The fertile Robertson Valley with its variety of meso - climates and soil conditions creates a wide spectrum of terroirs, allowing us to produce an exciting diversity of wine styles.

WELCOME TO OUR VALLEY
Situated 160 kilometers from Cape Town, Robertson Valley is bordered by the lower reaches of the Breede River to the south and the spectacular Langeberg Mountains to the north. Robertson Valley is blessed with a mild climate and a range of soils that have the highest pH of all the wine growing regions in South Africa, thus providing vines with an exceptionally healthy growing medium. Mild days with unlimited sunshine during the growth season are tempered by prevailing sea breezes, which rise up over the mountains and into the vineyards, cooling off the grapes. The vineyards are planted specifically to take advantage of the breezes, as well as the multitude of soil types, ranging from the rich alluvial soils on the banks of the Breede River to the well drained soils in the valley, and shale and sandstone soils rich in lime on the mountain slopes. Combined with the abundant, fresh supply of mountain water feeding the Breede River, the Robertson Valley is renowned for producing excellent wines every year.

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
The soul of the Robertson Winery is found in its member families. In 1941, Giepie Rossouw and Alwyn Bruwer convinced a number of other Robertson Valley grape growers to form a winery in which all families would own a share. Naming their new venture Robertson Winery, after Scottish minister Dr William Robertson, who settled in the area in 1822, the families purchased an abandoned missionary church built in the late 1880s to house their new winery. Pon van Zyl served as Robertson Winery’s first winemaker and, until his retirement in 1984, was instrumental in setting a course that took Robertson from its humble beginnings to being the third largest winery in South Africa. In 1984, Van Zyl handed over the reins to Bowen Botha, under whose guidance Robertson Winery has become a global brand, recognised for the quality and value of its wines, produced in one of South Africa’s most modern cellars. Today, Robertson Winery’s forty member families, of whom twenty six are descendants of the original owners, can be justifiably proud of having stood together to build a successful winery based on family values spanning over four generations.
